Safer Internet Day #SID2014
Yesterday was Safer Internet Day. An international event on the second day, of the second week, of the second month of the year. Â The event brings together various charitable and commercial organisations to push the message of safe internet use to the world. Â This years theme was ‘Let’s create a better internet together’.
It’s true to say that I believe every day of the year should be a safer internet day. Â However having a single day where the media, politicians, educators and the public combine to discuss the subject is extremely powerful – an opportunity not to be missed.
I decided fairly late on that I’d like to create an archive so that the day could continue beyond February the 11th. Â I wanted to bring together all the good messages and resources people were sharing on a global scale. Â Twitter is my favourite social network however I knew people would be sharing the message much further afield than that.
Using Rebelmouse I was able to monitor twitter, facebook, instagram, youtube and google+ for mentions of the day.  Rebelmouse is able to create a dynamic and interesting page incorporating text, pictures and videos – leaving links to the authors and original media.  It truly is a beautiful thing, which I can’t recommend enough.  I’m also very grateful to Rebelmouse for publicising this page themselves (more than once) to thousands of social media accounts.  This page truly hit a global audience.
Watching the posts flood in over the day was fascinating – and thankfully overwhelmingly positive. Â Even though the day is over the posts are still updating. Â Hopefully over the coming weeks people will still be looking at it, scrolling through the almost endless archive of resources – commenting and asking questions of the authors. I think it’s a wonderful archive of the hard work individuals and organisations put into the event to make it a success.
